AVI3M challenges students to explore visual expression through traditional and contemporary art forms.
Students refine their technical skills in :
  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Mixed media
  • While studying the elements
  • Principles of design.

Emphasis is placed on developing personal style, cultural awareness, and critical thinking through both studio work and art analysis.
This course prepares students for higher-level art studies or creative fields.

Unit 1: Foundations of Visual Arts

Students explore core design elements and principles while experimenting with materials.
Lessons include:
  • Introduction to Visual Arts & Design

  • Elements and Principles of Art

  • Drawing Techniques & Media

  • Understanding Colour Theory

  • Developing a Sketchbook Practice

Unit 2: Creative Process and Media Exploration

This unit encourages students to develop personal expression through diverse projects.
Lessons include:
  • Painting and Mixed Media Techniques

  • Printmaking and Collage

  • Sculpture and 3D Art Forms

  • Creating Art with a Message

  • Exploring Global Art Styles and Cultures

Unit 3: Art History, Critique, and Final Project

Students analyze historical art movements and complete a culminating piece
Lessons include:
  • Major Art Movements (e.g., Renaissance to Modernism)

  • Art Criticism and Interpretation

  • Artist Case Studies

  • Planning and Executing a Final Art Piece

  • Presenting and Reflecting on Final Work

  • 70% of the final grade is based on coursework, including:
    • Sketchbook submissions and technique exercises

    • Studio projects in various media

    • Art critiques, process reflections, and research tasks
  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 10% Culminating art project with artist statement

    • 20% Final critique or written analysis exam

All assessments are aligned with the Ontario arts curriculum and are designed to nurture creativity, technical ability, and visual literacy.
