ASM3O introduces students to the creative and technical world of media arts.

Students explore the elements and principles of design through

  • Photography
  • Digital media
  • Audio production
  • Video creation.
This course encourages experimentation with new media tools while developing an understanding of how media can be used to inform, persuade, and inspire. Through hands-on projects and media analysis, students gain skills essential for today’s digital world.

Unit 1: Introduction to Media Arts

Students are introduced to foundational media concepts and tools.
Lessons include:
  • What is Media Arts?

  • Elements & Principles of Design in Digital Context

  • Introduction to Digital Imaging

  • Creative Process and Brainstorming

  • Project Planning and Time Management

Unit 2: Media Production and Techniques

This unit focuses on developing practical skills in photography, video, and audio.
Lessons include:
  • Composition and Camera Techniques

  • Audio and Soundscapes

  • Basic Video Editing

  • Stop Motion and Animation Basics

  • Typography and Graphic Layout

Unit 3: Storytelling and Message in Media

Students explore how to use media to convey meaning and emotion.

  • Narrative Structures in Media

  • Mood, Symbolism, and Visual Metaphors

  • Creating Public Service Announcement

  • Storyboarding and Script Writing

  • Influences of Media on Culture

Unit 4: Independent Media Project

Students synthesize their learning by producing a final project.

    • Media projects across video, audio, and digital platforms

    • Storyboards, design proposals, and process journals

    • In-class critiques and reflections
  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 10% Culminating media project (individual or group-based
    • 20% Final written reflection or analysis of media techniques and messages
All assessments align with the Ontario curriculum and aim to build creativity, technical fluency, and critical thinking in media production.
