SBI3U

Subject:

Biology

Course type:

open

Prerequiste:

None

SBI3U explores the diversity of life through molecular biology, genetics, anatomy, evolution, and ecology. This course prepares students for advanced science by fostering inquiry, lab skills, and critical thinking.

Through engaging lessons and experiments, students examine living systems, understand biological processes, and analyze the relationships between organisms and their environments.

Unit 1: Genetic Processes

Students explore cell division, heredity, and the molecular basis of inheritance.
Lessons include:
  • Mitosis & Its Effects

  • Meiosis & Reproduction

  • Mendelian Genetics

  • Post-Mendelian Genetics & Blood Types

  • Sex Linkage and Genetic Disorders

  • DNA Structure and Mutations

  • Chromosomal Abnormalities

  • Applying Genetics

Unit 2: Internal Systems and Regulation

Students examine the structure and function of major internal systems in the human body.
Lessons include:
  • Nutrients and Digestion

  • Digestive Organs & Accessory Systems

  • Digestion in Other Organisms

  • Respiratory System & Breathing Mechanisms

  • Comparative Respiratory Structures

Unit 3: Culminating Activity and Final Exam

Students apply their cumulative knowledge through independent analysis and final evaluations.
Lessons include:
  • Research Task or Lab Application

  • Final Biology Exam (covering all five units)

Unit 4: Diversity of Living Things

This unit focuses on classification systems and evolutionary relationships.
Lessons include:
  • Taxonomy and Binomial Nomenclature

  • Classification of Organisms

  • Kingdoms and Domains

  • Viruses vs. Living Cells

  • Evolution of Biodiversity

Unit 5: Evolution

Students explore the theory of evolution and the evidence supporting it.
Lessons include:
  • Darwin and Natural Selection

  • Fossil Records and Transitional Species

  • Evolutionary Mechanisms (mutation, drift, selection)

  • Speciation and Adaptation

  • Human Evolution

  • 70% of the final grade is based on coursework, including:
    • Unit quizzes, lab reports, reflections

    • Assignments like Punnett squares, system comparisons, and evolution debates

  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 10% Culminating project (e.g., genetic research or experimental lab write-up)

    • 20% Final exam covering all units

All assessments align with the Ontario science curriculum, building student skills in scientific inquiry, analysis, and real-world biological understanding.
