Grade 9 Math (MTH1W) introduces students to a broad spectrum of mathematical concepts and real-world applications through a de-streamed and inclusive approach. This course develops problem-solving, logical reasoning, and financial literacy skills that are essential for success in both academic and everyday contexts

Unit 1: Numbers
This unit explores the foundations of number theory and operations. Students develop an understanding of how numbers behave and how they are used to model real-world situations.
Lessons include:
  • History of Numbers

  • Sets and Classifications

  • Factors, Multiples, and Divisibility

  • Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

  • Ratios, Rates, and Proportion

Unit 2: Algebra
Students investigate patterns, relationships, and algebraic models. They develop fluency in writing and solving equations and interpreting algebraic expressions.

Unit 4: Geometry & Financial Literacy
Students explore two key strands—spatial reasoning through geometry, and responsible decision-making through financial literacy.
Lessons include:

  • Triangles, Angles, and Area

  • Surface Area and Volume

  • Budgeting and Saving

  • Understanding Credit and Interest

Student learning in MTH1W is assessed through a balance of performance tasks, written work, and problem-solving activities:
  • 70% of the final grade is based on unit evaluations, quizzes, and assignments
  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 10% from a culminating creative project or recorded performance
    • 20% from a final written or theory-based exam
All assessments are in accordance with Ontario curriculum expectations and emphasize real-world problem-solving, clarity of communication, and confidence in mathematical thinking.
