Grade 9 English (ENL1W) equips students with essential communication, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. Through reading, writing, speaking, and media analysis, students explore a wide range of literary and informational texts.

Unit 1: Word Power – Mastering Communication Skills
This unit focuses on the fundamentals of effective communication. Students learn vocabulary development, grammar, sentence structure, and how to communicate ideas clearly and confidently in both speech and writing.

Unit 2: Alice in Wonderland

Unit 3: The Art of Writing

Student achievement in ENL1W is based on a variety of assessments designed to measure comprehension, expression, and analytical thinking:
  • 70% of the final grade is based on evaluations throughout the course. This includes reading responses, writing exercises, participation, and unit assignments.
  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 10% Culminating writing task
    • 20% Final written exam
All assessments follow Ontario curriculum expectations and help build students’ academic confidence and communication skills for high school and beyond.
