ASM4M challenges students to create and analyze media artworks through an interdisciplinary approach combining visual art, digital design, photography, film, and sound.

Students explore

  • themes of identity

  • Technology while developing advanced technical skills in digital media tools.
The course prepares students for postsecondary programs in media, design, communication, and creative industries.

Unit 1: Foundations of Media Arts

Students build foundational knowledge of media arts concepts and creative processes.
Lessons include:
  • Elements and Principles of Media Arts

  • Media Formats and Hybrid Practices

  •  Historical and Contemporary Influences

  •  Copyright, Appropriation, and Fair Use

  •  Project Planning and Storyboarding

Unit 2: Media Creation and Production

This unit focuses on developing, refining, and presenting media artworks.
Lessons include:
  • Photography and Digital Imaging

  • Video Editing and Motion Graphics

  • Sound Design and Audio Integration

  • Interactive and Web-Based Media

  • Installation and Performance-Based Media

  • Peer Feedback and Iterative Design

Unit 3: Cultural, Social, and Career Connections

Students examine the impact of media arts in society and explore career pathways.
Lessons include:
  • Media Arts and Identity

  •  Representation, Stereotypes, and Inclusivity in Media

  •  Media and Social Commentary

  • Careers in Media Arts and Creative Industries

  • Portfolio Development and Final Project Planning

  • 70% of the final grade is based on coursework, including:
    • Media production projects using various tools (e.g., Photoshop, Premiere, GarageBand)

    • Artist statements and reflective critiques

    • Concept development and project proposals

    • Cultural analysis and visual literacy tasks

  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 15% Final media arts portfolio or exhibit

    • 15% Artist reflection and critical analysis presentation

All assessments follow Ontario curriculum standards and are designed to foster visual literacy, technical proficiency, and personal expression through media-rich creative practice.
