Unit 1: Practical Writing Skills

Students develop core writing competencies through structured tasks.
Lessons include:
  • Types of Essay Writing

  •  Understanding Audience and Purpose

  • Developing a Topic and Thesis

  • Formal vs. Informal Language

  •  Methods of Development and Organizational Patterns

  •  Introductions and Conclusions

  •  Concise Writing and Research Basics

Unit 2: Shakespearean Drama – Hamlet

Students study Shakespeare’s Hamlet with a focus on comprehension and analysis.
Lessons include:
  • Introduction to Hamlet

  •  Act-by-Act Reading (Acts I–V)

  •  Plot Summaries and Character Discussions

  •  Understanding Themes and Motifs

  •  Literary Devices in the Play

Unit 3: Media Literacy and Advertising

This unit focuses on analyzing and creating media messages.

Unit 4: Novel Study – The Great Gatsby

Students explore literary themes and critical reading skills through novel analysis.

Unit 5: Final Evaluation

Students apply their reading and writing skills in two summative evaluations.

  • Culminating Assignment

  • Final Exam

  • 70% of the final grade is based on coursework, including:
    •  Short essays, paragraph writing, and grammar practice

    • Comprehension quizzes and media critiques

    •  Creative advertising projects

    •  Thematic reflections and character studies

  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 10% Culminating literary or media-based assignment

    • 20% Final written exam

All assessments follow Ontario curriculum standards and emphasize clarity, critical thinking, and workplace-ready communication skills
