The course focuses on reading and interpreting fiction and non-fiction texts, building formal and persuasive writing skills, and developing confidence in communication.
Students also gain deeper cultural knowledge and critical thinking skills as they engage with Canadian and global topics.
Unit 1: Academic Language and Formal Communication
Students develop formal language skills for academic and real-world communication.

  • The News and Media in Canada

  • 70% of the final grade is based on coursework, and assignments.
    • Academic writing tasks (essays, reports, reflections)

    • Short story and media analysis assignments

    • Oral presentations and group discussions

    • Research and inquiry projects on Canadian culture

    • Quizzes and vocabulary building exercises

  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:

    • 10% Culminating portfolio (writing samples, media responses, presentations)

    • 20% Final test covering reading comprehension, writing, and media literacy
