CHV2O introduces students to the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and explores how individuals and groups can actively participate in Canadian society. Students examine the roles of governments, the importance of civic engagement, and the influence of political, social, and legal systems.

Unit 1: Civic Awareness
Students explore what it means to be an informed, engaged citizen in a democratic society.

  • Opinion Polling in Democracy

Unit 2: Civic Engagement and Action
This unit emphasizes how students can make a difference in their communities and beyond.

  • Becoming an Active Citizen

  • Values, Beliefs, and Perspectives

  • Media Influence and Literacy

  • Participating in Discussions and Debates

  • The Role of Media in Elections

Unit 3: Government, Policy, and Social Change
Students analyze how governments function, create policy, and interact with citizens.
Lessons include:
  • Influence of Foreign Actors in Canada

  • How Governments Raise Revenue

  • The Legislative Process

  • Citizens’ Role in Creating Social Change

Unit 4: Culminating Activity
Students apply what they've learned in a culminating project that reflects their understanding of civic responsibility.
Lessons include:
  • Culminating Assignment: worth 10% of the final course grade

Assessment in CHV2O emphasizes real-world thinking, participation, and communication:
  • 70% of the final grade comes from coursework across the units and assignments
  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:

      10% Culminating assignment (citizenship-focused project)

      20% Final written exam on civic structures and participation

All assessments align with Ontario curriculum expectations and aim to develop students' understanding of their role as informed, responsible, and active citizens.
